International Currencies: Countries and their Currencies

Each country uses currency (any form of money) as a medium of exchange of value for goods and services. Currencies are usually in the forms of paper bills (notes) and metal coins. It is issued by a government or a central bank of a country and is used as legal tender and a basis for trade where it is circulated within an economy. Currencies of different monetary unit are given a fixed value and are represented by a name and/or a symbol.

Most countries create their own currency (money) however, there are those countries that use the currency of other nations as their official currency or interchangeably at a rate of change of 1:1 with that other country’s currency. This process is known as official dollarization. Some countries for example that use the U.S. dollar as their official currency are Ecuador (2000) - uses its own coins, El Salvador (2001), East Timor (2000), the British Virgin Islands (1959), Turks and Caicos Islands (1973), the Marshall Islands (1944) and others. Countries for example, like Panama, Bermuda and the Bahamas, even though they mint and circulate their own legal tender, they also interchangeably use the U.S. currency which is equivalent in value to the U.S. dollar.
Another exception of countries not using its own currency, would be the euro. This is a currency that is used as the currency for several European countries.
