Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus for members of the Christian religion. It is both a holiday and a holy day that is usually observed on December 25 of each year. However, it is also celebrated as a secular holiday in many countries around the world. Thus, it is largely commercialized by businesses and is characterized by the exchanging of gifts amongst families and special friends. It is a time for family gatherings, holiday meals, fun, and festivities. A time for Santa Claus (Father Christmas), stars, carolers, twinkling lights, ornaments and gifts. However, Christmas is the most economically significant holiday of the year in most countries. The United States government declared Christmas a federal holiday on June 26, 1870 and today it is one of the biggest event of the year. All schools/colleges/universities, federal government, all state governments and most businesses usually give employees/students one or two days off.

Dutch (Netherlands):Prettig Kerstfeest
Hello
ReplyDeleteThis was a real Great Blog.. you know if i were you i would go to http://www.autosurfmonster.com and submit this blog to their free autosurf traffic exchange program, this way thousands of people see your blog for free!!
Rock on , and i look forward to all the updates.
jenny
And in doggie language it's...
ReplyDelete"Fleas Navidad"
~Woof!
Storm
Actually, in India it's "Natal Mubarak". Most people simply say "Merry Christmas," though.
ReplyDelete"Shub Naya Baras" means "Happy New Year".
Deepak
That was so interesting. I tried reading each and every one of them!
ReplyDeleteVoted again btw - good luck!
I have stumbled through this blog many times when surfing via traffic exchanges, and I gotta say, I find the infomation very useful. This Christmas list sure is a great idea.
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion though. I think it would be good if you take note of and include your source from which you got your information. This is with the assumption that you based it on another reference.
Keep em coming!
In the Arabic speaking countries it is "Milad Mubarak" instead of "Mboni Chrismen."
ReplyDeleteThanks for the list.
Edmondson,
ReplyDeleteYou forgot about Spanish!
Feliz Navidad
I did not see it.
I have the moral obligation to take this opportunity to express my admiration to the quality of the information posted in this blog on a weekly basis.
ReplyDeleteIt is an example of what an informative blog should be like. Thank you very much for your dedication. I'm an educator and promote my students to read your blog to create the habit of good reading sources.
Have a Merry Christmas in English and Feliz Navidad in Spanish, since I'm from Panama where we speak the language of Cervantes.
Regards,
Omar.-
Not to nitpick, but in Norway 'gledelig jul' is very oldfashioned and mostly found on vintage xmas cards. These days, 'god jul' is all the rage...
ReplyDeleteExcellent! I feel much better knowing that :)
ReplyDeleteThank you.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the compliment and for stopping by.
Amstaffie:
I like your sense of humor there :) Thanks for the visit and have a great week.
Deepak Morris:
Thanks for pointing that out :) It is very much appreciated! I will try and see if I can verify the one you have given.
I also came across some other greetings that are used to say Merry Christmas in India also. So, just to be on the safe side, until I can verify the one you have given, I will use one of these instead:
Xmas Mubarak, Shubh Christmas (Hindi - India's national language), Christmas kee Badahi hoo!, Krismas ki subhkamna and Hindi Shubh Dipavali
Thanks also for stopping by :)
Furkids:
Glad you found it interesting! Now you can give season greetings to some of your friends around the world :)
Thanks once again for the vote!! It is greatly appreciated : )
The Material Boy:
Thanks very much for stopping by and leaving a comment this time around!! It is much appreciated.
Thanks for the suggestion. Earlier I use to place references from sources where I got my information but decided it was not essential for this type of blogging format that I am using. Some articles are written by me also based on my background knowledge. I will however, take your suggestion into future consideration.
Thanks once again.
Daedalus:
Thanks for the visit and the comment. Thanks also, for that bit of information, it is appreciated. I will get to it later.
Orikinal:
Glad to have you back :) I didn’t forget it, it’s there. You missed it.

Faroe Islands is: Gleðilig jól
ReplyDeletenot gledhilig jol
For Thailand, I think you meant "sawasdii pii mai" which means happy new year.
ReplyDeleteThere is no Thai word for Christmas so they just use the English word.
Hello everybody!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas and Happy New Year
I was born in Romania and now I live in Canada. I was looking how to say Marry Christmas in other languages, and I saw also the translation in Romanian.
Unfortunately, I should make a remark: Sarbatori Vesele is like Gay Christmas. Maybe it is a stupid translation made by a computer or other person who just started lerning Romanian. The right transaltion is Craciun Fericit (Merry Christmas) and Sarbatori Fericite (Happy Holidays).
Thank you for your attention.
Cristian
Sheng dan kuai le!
ReplyDeletewow... thanks for the effort... will you be doing the same thing but in another saying?? such as Happy New Year or something..???
ReplyDeleteAppreciate that.
Thanks my daughter has a spelling bonus word that she was trying to figure out...put it on the search engine and up popped your site. Merry Christmas in Russian "Hristos Razdajetsja."
ReplyDeleteActually ther is a smmall mistake in Polish. Boze Narodzenie means Christmas but Merry Christmas in Polish is Wesolych Swiat
ReplyDeleteThe Turkish provided above is correct but useless since Turks don't celebrate Christmas. Nobody will need to say Merry Christmas to a Turk.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to let you know, as my parents are missionaries, in Russian, it is actually "S Rozdjestvom Hristovim". Notice the "S" in front. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteI'm from Canada and though there are many, many languages spoken here, i am surprised that you included "Selamat Hari Natal", an Indonesian greeting, with the other two (English and French which are our official languages). One of the Chinese dialects, Italian, German or Punjabi would be far more widely spoken than what appears to be Indonesian. Also, to be picky, you spell it "Noël", not "Noel".
Cheers!
Since when do we say happy Christmas in Australia?
ReplyDeleteGet your facts right!
Ways the phrase "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" is being said in many different languages in video :)

Enjoy!
As commented earlier, in Norway "Gledelig jul" is very old fashioned and people are saying "God jul" and on the west coast they also might say "God jol"
ReplyDeleteGod jul/jol to everybody!
Actually in Vietnamese, it is "chúc mừng giáng sinh"
ReplyDeleteI know so many people who really would rather stay home on a winter's evening than
ReplyDeletego to a "Christmas Party." It's not that they're "humbugs." It's just that chatting about
nothing with someone, they don't really know and probably won't see again is not
how they'd like to spend their precious holiday.
Celebrate Christmas with us
Check out the youtube video of different people saying Merry Christmas in different languages. ie. French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean...

Great blog, lot of information.
ReplyDeleteWish you merry xmas.
Thailand say "SAWASDEE PEE MAI"
ReplyDeletesay SA-WAS-D-PEE-MAI
we say on January 1, every year
translation
คนไทยพูด "สวัสดีปีใหม่"
ในวันที่ 1 มกราคม ของทุกปี
but on December 25, we say Merry Christmas same you.
แต่วันที่ 25 ธันวาคม, เราพูดเมอรี่คริสมาสเหมือนคุณ
That is quite an incredible list. I wonder though, how many of these do you remember?
ReplyDeleteOne of the best articles i have read.I Like your effort and hardworking.
