The United Nations in summary - who are they ?

Published Friday, May 27, 2005

I decided not to get too detail since, you can find out more about this organization by visiting their website, given below . However, here is a synopsis that will give you a over view about the UN.
*************************
In time past (not too long ago), countries around the world considered war an inevitable way of life and peace was only a dream for those in “wonderland”. However, in World War I , 9 million people lives were taken, with France and Germany losing approximately 25% of their male population. Then in World War II, 55 million people died, including 6 million Jews in the Nazi concentration camps. The world now faced with the largest catastrophe in human history, saw that war was a threat to our very survival as a specie on this earth. The need for world peace was now stronger than ever and peace between nations were no longer seen as a “wonderland” dream.

After World War II, the international community recognized its responsibility to guarantee the civil liberties of the peoples of the world, and to work for peace, security and stability on a worldwide scale. The United Nations Charter was then drawn up by the Allied of 51(now 191) countries on the 24th of October 1945. The Charter* lays out the four purposes and seven principles of the UN:

Purposes

1. To preserve world peace and security.

2. To encourage and develop friendly relations among nations.

3. To help nations cooperate in solving their international problems.

4. To serve as an neutral center through which nations can work to attain these goals.

Principles

1. All members have equal rights.

2. All members must carry out their duties under the Charter, to ensure all the rights and benefits that comes with membership.

3. All members agree to the principle of settling their international disputes peacefully so that; peace, security and justice, are not endangered.

4. Members agree not to use force or the threat of force against other nations, except in self-defense.

5. All members must agree to help the UN in every action it takes seeking to fulfill the purposes of the Charter, and should refrain from giving assistance to any nation that the UN is taking preventive or enforcement action against.

6. The UN agrees to act on the principle that nonmember states have the same duties as member states to preserve world peace and security.

7. The UN accepts the principle of not interfering in the actions of a member nation within its own jurisdiction.

The United Nation has six main organs:

1.
General Assembly - UN parliament, all member represented and each having one vote.

2. Security Council - peace keeping organ. Has a membership of 15. Five (5 ) of which are permanent.

3. Economic and Social Council -monitors economic, social, cultural, educational, health matters and the guarantee of human rights.

4. Trusteeship Council - oversee the administration of UN Trust Territories.

5. Secretariat - manage the day-to-day operation of the various organs.

6. International Court of Justice - preside over cases of international law.
