Countries around the World and their Capital City
A country’s capital is usually the principal city associated with a country's seat of government. Historically, the capital is usually the major economic center of a nation and the center of political power and thus, it is the one that the enemy usually captures first after invading a country. Capturing the capital is usually a military strategy that means defeat for the country being invaded since it guarantees capture of the government. Also, it is usually most the populous city attracting people from all classes and professions because it is the country’s cultural, social, economic, political and intellectual center. However, today, this not always the case for all capital cities, there are countries with unorthodox capital cities which are not the most populous cities or host to the seat of government. This may be due to pragmatic reasons or situations in that country. Some capital cities maybe unofficial while others official and they do not represent the seat of the government. So a capital city is not necessarily in few cases, the symbol for the state and its government. Here's a list of countries worldwide with their capitals below:

Some countries might have lost their capital in an ancient war, and moved their capital.
I think that's happened quite a bit.
Right you are Phoenix :) One example of such a case is Nubia (Kingdom of Kush or Cush) which is now known as Sudan. The ancient Nubians (Kushites) first had their capital city at the city of Napata but after they were conquered by the Assyrians they then moved it to Meroe.
