The Academy Award, commonly known as the Oscars, is the main national film award in the USA and also the most widely and popularly known film awards in the world. It is an annual award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (a professional honorary organization) for achievements in motion picture production and performance. This includes recognition in areas such as acting, directing, screenwriting, costume design, film editing and sound editing just to name a few. A gold-plated statuette (picture shown left), is bestowed upon the winners in each of the 24 categories.
