The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) is the former federation of Communist states in Eastern Europe and northern and central Asia from 1922 until 1991. It was the world's largest country, covering one-sixth of the land area of the world. The Soviet Union was the Communist superpower during the Cold War.
